Funding Options: Is Live-in Care Eligible for Local Authority Support?

Many families are surprised to learn that help may be available to fund live-in care — whether through local authorities, NHS support, or benefits.

Here’s what you need to know.

1. Local Authority Support

Your local council can carry out a Care Needs Assessment. If your loved one is found to have eligible needs, a Financial Assessment follows.

Depending on income and assets, the council may contribute towards live-in care, or offer direct payments so you can arrange care independently.

2. NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC)

If your loved one has complex, ongoing health needs, they may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare — which covers the full cost of care, regardless of financial means. This applies whether the care is delivered at home or in a residential setting.

McDonald Homecare can assist with documentation and liaise with health professionals during this process.

3. Attendance Allowance / Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

These non-means-tested benefits are available to people over 65 (Attendance Allowance) or under 65 (PIP) who need help due to disability or illness. They can be used to help fund care.

4. Self-Funding

Even if your loved one doesn’t qualify for financial support, we can help families plan budgets and explore flexible options — including short-term or part-time care.
